Vancouver’s Downtown Business Improvement Association has radically changed their stance on bike lane installation. An early opponent of AAA bike lane installation, the DVBIA has now become a platinum sponsor of HUB Cycling and. DVBIA president Charles Gauthier spoke out in 2011, stating that despite the environmental benefits of bike lanes, they had negative ramifications for adjacent businesses. This was backed by a study prepared for the City of Vancouver, the Vancouver Board of Trade, and the DVBIA by Stantec Consulting and the Mustel Group, which found that the losses for nearby businesses would be valued at around $2.4 million. The study also examined “hot spots” in which certain businesses might suffer more than others. At that time, Mayor Gregor Robertson expressed concern for negative economic impacts upon smaller businesses.
